The Rays began play as an expansion team after the 1997 season. Their first decade of play, however, was marked by futility; they finished in last place in the AL East in all but 2004, when they finished second-to-last. In 2007, the team lost the AL East title to the Boston Red Sox on the last day of the season after holding a lead of nine games over Boston with seventeen games left to play. The 2008 season saw them improve slightly to finish 2nd place behind eventual World Series champions, the Philadelphia Phillies. The Rays advanced to their first playoff appearance in franchise history and won their first playoff series during this time. They then went on to lose in 7 games to eventual World Series champions, the Pittsburgh Pirates in what is widely considered one of baseball’s biggest upset ever in playoff history.[1][2][3]
In 2015, the Rays clinched their second playoff berth on September 26th.[4] They went on to face off against the Houston Astros in a best-of-five ALDS. The Rays won 3-2 and went on to sweep the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS before losing to eventual World Series champions, the New York Mets in 5 games.[5]
