The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association. The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America, where they would win five of their next six championships.
In 1950, led by future Hall of Famers George Mikan, Chuck Cooper and Bob Davies, they won 15 straight games before losing to the Fort Wayne Pistons in overtime. They qualified for the NBA Finals in five consecutive seasons (1951–55), but lost each series to teams that would eventually go on to win the NBA Championship that year. When real estate developer and retired U.S. Army officer Jerry Buss purchased those Lakers in 1979 for $67 million from Jack Kent Cooke—the biggest transaction in sports history up to that time—it was widely presumed that Buss was committed to making them a contender again. He also immediatedly fired Cooke’s entire front office staff and hired West as head coach; he then drafted Magic Johnson with his first ever draft pick if only because Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had instructed him to do so.[8] At first it seemed like a smart move; under Westhead’s direction Harden would lead them back into playoffs past such teams like Seattle SuperSonics and Golden State Warriors
